Armor Lux striped cotton Breton Shirts
(round neck style):
These are genuine striped Breton shirts in 100% pure, soft, knitted cotton, made by Armor Lux
of France. They are in a round neck style, and T-shirt shape. The adult short sleeve (styles 1527
and 73023/73842) are only available in lightweight jersey cotton, while the adult long sleeve
shirts (style 1525, which is straight-sided and style 4277 which is slightly fitted at the waist and
has a narrower shoulder) are only available in heavier interlock cotton.
The striped Breton top as we know it today came into being following the 27th March 1858 Act
of France which introduced the navy and white striped shirt as the uniform for French naval
seaman in Brittany (as the distinctive pattern of stripes made them easier to spot in the water).
The shirt was known locally as marinière or matelot and the original design featured 21 stripes,
one for each of Napoleon's victories.
We measure the actual shirts and not the chest size of our potential customers. The sizes shown
below are those in use in France, with an approximate measurement given in inches and
centimetres for each size. Please be aware that, in general, the short-sleeve shirts are, size for
size, larger than the long-sleeve shirts. Please indicate the size required (generally two inches
larger than chest measurement) and we will match it as closely as possible. If you prefer a
looser fit please order a larger size still. Please note also that the navy colour used by Armor Lux
is very dark.
