Patterns
Some of the more popular patterns are shown below in both diagrammatic representations and
small images of actual Ganseys.
Many of our knitters have been with us for over twenty years. Such is their expertise, that we are
capable of producing a Gansey from any recorded pattern.
Looking for a Bridlington Gansey? There isn’t one; no authentic Bridlington Gansey has ever existed.
Bridlington was not a fishing port until after the coming of the railways in the 1840s, by which time
the patterns were well-established. Bridlington fishermen would have worn a Flamborough pattern,
or perhaps even a Filey. There is one publication we are aware of which shows two children wearing
Ganseys described as “Bridlington” but they are, in fact, replicas of the Flamborough Gansey their
father is wearing.

Shown here is Peter
Robinson's Filey Gansey
in Breton Tan 5-ply wool,
completed from one of
our Kits.
An experienced knitter,
Mr Robinson added:
“I gave an extra diamond
to the arms because it
took it to what I felt was a
natural place just above
the elbow.
Thanks again for the
excellent service.”

Portpatrick Gansey
While all the Gansey patterns shown above are traditional,
there is nothing to stop the dedicated knitter designing
his/her own pattern, and this was the case with Kathleen
Robinson who, having purchased one of our kits, decided
to knit a Gansey using motifs from Portpatrick in Scotland,
where her son Peter is a volunteer member of the
Lifeboat. The photograph she has kindly sent shows Peter
proudly wearing his Gansey; as Kathleen explains, she “re-
designed the top to represent as much as possible
Portpatrick Harbour. So at the sides are the Harbour
walls, ladders, hawsers, chains and ropes. In the middle
section there are waves at the bottom and a zig-zag
skyline. In the middle is Dorn Rock [which] shelters the
Harbour”.
